Thomas Claiborn, IV

Thomas Claiborn IV is a Pittsburgh native who lives by the principle of “living a legacy,” dedicating his life to serving children, families, and communities in Arizona. For more than 20 years, Thomas has worked in the non-profit and child-development sectors, channeling his efforts toward justice, generational impact, and equitable access to opportunity.

In his current role as Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives at First Things First, Arizona’s statewide early childhood agency, Thomas shapes cross-sector partnerships involving businesses, faith organizations, policy leaders, and community stakeholders. He leads the development and implementation of practical, scalable strategies that strengthen collective impact—ensuring families receive high-quality supports while fostering sustainability, volunteer engagement, and aligned vision across organizations.

As Pastor of Family Life at First Institutional Baptist Church, he also nurtures intergenerational connection and spiritual growth. In both his civic and ministry roles, Thomas embodies Carver’s value of community, working to bridge gaps and foster meaningful relationships that deliver both resources and belonging.

Thomas’s work aligns closely with The Carver’s mission to preserve and uplift Black history, culture, and knowledge systems. He deeply respects the center’s commitment to equity, education, and intergenerational inclusion—values foundational to his own heart for service and empowerment. His leadership is fueled by a conviction that when communities partner across sectors, they can unlock abundance for every generation.

A proud graduate of Howard University, Thomas continues to advance the legacy of historically Black institutions by promoting civic engagement, mentorship, and excellence. At home, he is married to his wife, Candace, of more than 17 years, and is a devoted father to their three children. He treasures time spent in film conversations, family play, and celebrating African heritage through his Knubian Family in Africana studies.

Thomas is honored to contribute his expertise, vision, and servant-leadership to The Carver Board—working to advance unity, cultural empowerment, and a future where Black history in Arizona inspires generational impact.
